Governor, Mayor Announce $200 Million Initiative To Improve Mental Health Services For Children

New, Comprehensive Effort Will Advance Breakthroughs in Children’s Mental Health

Governor George E. Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in conjunction with New York University (NYU) President John Sexton, today announced a new 120,000 square foot facility that will be the home for a new New York State Research Center at the NYU Child Study Center – which will be the largest child and adolescent psychiatric research and training facility in the world. The Center is part of a $200 million initiative to improve mental health services for adolescents and children.

The Governor announced that the State will commit a total of $65 million to this and related projects that will further New York’s commitment to cutting edge research and development in the area of children and adolescent mental health. New York will be contributing $30 million to the project itself, which will include a first of a kind, New York State Child Research Center at the NYU Child Center. The Governor also announced the State would commit $35 million to create a collaborative effort with the Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center, which will partner with the NYU Child Study Center.

“Whether its education, health care or mental health services, children are our most precious resource and that is why we continue to make record investments in all of these areas,” Governor Pataki said. “This announcement today is more great news and further proof that here in New York we will do whatever it takes to ensure that our children have every opportunity to get a great start in life. I want to thank Mayor Bloomberg and New York University for their efforts to work with us and make this new facility a reality.”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “New York City is home to many of the leading medical, research and educational facilities in the world. The addition of the NYU Child Study Center and its focus on treatment programs for child and adolescent psychiatric conditions will serve as a perfect compliment to the City’s extraordinary research and training facilities, and our efforts to develop a commercial bioscience center with the East River Science Park.
